Solar Heating / Cooling Products - Solar Controllers, Absorber Roof Tubing, and associated fittings
We do not encourage the use of solar as the sole heat source for spas unless you live in the tropics and seldom use the spa for extended periods late into the night. In most cases the primary heater will need to be electric or gas. Additionally we consider it pointless to install solar heating without a solar controller, and preferably with seperate pump.
The solar heating equipment listed below is suitable for use on pools and spas, for HEATING and COOLING.
Recommended sizing for spas and pools. We highly recommend the following surface area of solar absorber as compared to spa or pool water surface area:
Swimming Pools - 100% ie if the pool has a 30sqm surface area, install a minimum of 30sqm of solar absorber (in this case, 7 rolls). More in the case of coloured absorber.
Spas - 200%-400% ie most spas have a surface area of just under 4sqm. Install at least double to 4 times the spa water surface area of solar absorber (2-4 rolls) This difference from swimming pool requirements is due to the fact that spas operate at significantly higher temperatures - around 34-40 degrees. Pools are usually heated to around 26 degrees. To maintain maximum heating in cooler climates, or to gain maximum extended heating season, the more solar absorber, the better.
Some factors to consider when sizing - resultant temperature desired, location geographically, whether the absorber will be installed North facing or not, physical space for the absorber, how extended you want your swimming season to be, whether there is an alternate heat source fitted or to be fitted.
